How do I get audio out of my HDMI port on my laptop?

I hooked up my HP Pavilion using the HDMI port and I have the video working, but there’s no sound. Does the HP laptop HDMI only carry a video signal?

are you sure that your not confusing a USB port with HDMI> If not then you must have a computer set up to play TV high def. I think you have a USB port as most computers especially laptops have more than one. The point that Im trying to make here is that a HDMI connector looks very similar to a USB connector and if you had a HDMI then it would be just going to the device control panel in your computer and turning on the appropriate port for audio because HDMI does handle both audio and video> USB connections however may require external speaker connections from your cable box which would have to be adapted from RCA ‘s to 1/8″ mini jacks that your computer probably supports. Usually only a mono port which takes away from the sound quality cause its no longer stereo I hope you understand most computers arent set up as TVs especially laptops so look at your connection again is it really HDMI
